Skunk Hour

Skunk Hour’s show explores the sounds and culture of underground dance music, with a particular love for jungle, jungle tekno, hardcore and trance. Her journey into DJing began at 18, after moving to London to study at King’s College London. Through the university’s DJ Society, she learnt to mix digitally and became immersed in London’s underground scene, from raves and warehouses to festivals and fields. Jungle was the sound that first really captured her attention and led her deeper into the scene. As part of KCL’s DJ committee, she also helped organise nights and DJed at venues including Corsica Studios, Venue MOT and other grassroots spaces. Now 23 and based in Bury St Edmunds, Skunk Hour regularly plays in Ipswich and is part of Subject Sounds and Genesis Sound System. She recently helped run the Barghain Stage at GemFest, powered by Genesis Sound System, and has a particular interest in sound engineering and audio quality. Since moving back to Suffolk, she has also started mixing vinyl. She has been collecting records for much longer, including a selection of her dad’s 90s dance records spanning acid house, hard house and hardcore. Her interest in rave culture extends beyond DJing. She wrote her university dissertation on the late-80s and early-90s rave scene in Britain and hopes to pursue ethnomusicology in the future. As a woman in music, she is also passionate about supporting other women in the scene, playing their music in her sets and seeing greater representation across lineups. Her show is a chance to share the music she loves while exploring the sound, community and history behind underground dance culture.
